3D-Modell: University of Warsaw
Die Wissenschaft hat von nun an einen neuen Blick auf unsere Galaxie. Das 3D- Modell das den Forschern gelungen ist, zeigt nicht mehr die bekannte Spiralform und eröffnet somit neue Möglichkeiten zum besseren Verständnis der Galaxie. Die bislang entstandenen Karten der Milchstraße waren Ergebnis indirekter Messungen, die durch Beobachtungen von Sternen oder Gasen bestimmter Richtungen und Strukturen entstanden. Die nun durch neue Messmethoden entstandene 3-D Karte verspricht nicht nur neue Perspektiven, sondern auch ein erweitertes Verständnis zur Entstehungsgeschichte unserer Galaxie. Sie wurde erstmals im Fachmagazin Science veröffentlicht. Die Karte verwendet lediglich direkte Entfernungen einzelner Sterne und setzt sich, anders als in bisherigen Vermessungen, aus den Abmessungen der Abstände von pulsionsveränderlichen Sternen, deren Helligkeit schwankt, zusammen. Die sogenannten Cepheiden haben durch ihren periodischen Wechsel der Helligkeit eine besondere Bedeutung für die Astrophysik. Ihre Leuchtkraft dient der Bestimmung von Entfernungen zwischen den Sternen. Die Wissenschaft nennt den Mechanismus der diesen periodischen Wechsel der Helligkeit pulsionsveränderlicher Sterne steuert, Kappa-Mechanismus. Das Forscherteam der Universität Warschau untersuchte 6 Jahre lang 2.431 Cepheiden. Zur Bestimmung der Entfernung zu den Sternen wurde ihre Pulsgeschwindigkeit in Bezug auf Größe und Temperatur gemessen. Die Sterne können dabei bis zu 100.000 mal heller als die Sonne sein. Je langsamer die Sterne pulsieren, umso heller sind sie in der Regel. Diese Tatsache hilft bei der Bestimmung der tatsächlichen Helligkeit eines Sterns. Auch bestimmte Gesetzmäßigkeiten die die 3D-Karte aufzeigte, wie die Anhäufung von Sternen gleichen Alters in engen Bögen, konnten dadurch erklärt werden. Gemessen wurden die Positionen mithilfe des optischen Gravitationslinsen-Experiment-Teleskop am Las-Campanas-Observatorium in Chile.
