Mittels einer speziellen Software bei dem die Bewegungen des iPads und die Fingergestig der spielenden Kinder im Hintergrund aufgezeichnet wurden, konnte in den Ergebnissen ein motorischer Unterschied zwischen autistischen und gesunden Kindern in der Handhabung ausgemacht werden. Eine Forschergruppe hat eine Studie mit der zutreffenden Verdachtsdiagnosen im Fachmagazin Scientific Reports veröffentlicht. Beteiligt waren 37 autistische und 45 gesunde Kinder die jeweils zwei Spiele spielten. Die Software wurde durch den Wissenschaftler Jonathan Delafield-Butt von der Universität Strathclyde in Glasgow zusammen mit Forschern aus Krakau untersucht. Im ersten Spiel (sharing) ging es darum Nahrungsmittel zu portionieren und auf vier Personen aufzuteilen. Im zweiten mussten die Kinder Konturen umfahren und diese ausmalen. Dabei kam heraus, dass autistische Kinder häufiger fester auf das Tablet drücken und ihre Gesten mit stärkerem Druck ausüben. Die Analysesicherheit der Software, eine Autismus-Störung zu erkennen konnte auf 93 Prozent festgelegt werden. Sollten weitere Bestätigungen durch andere Forscher bekannt werden, würde dies eine Wende in der Diagnose von Autismus bedeuten. Somit könnten Autismus-Spektrum-Störungen noch vor dem Grundschulalter erkannt werden.
