Marburger Forscher hatten die klinischen Tests auf Antikörper und Nebenwirkungen hin überprüft. Das Ergebnis wies geringe und unbedenkliche Nebenwirkungen auf.
In der bislang größten Ebola-Epidemie sind seit dem Ausbruch letzten Jahres über 1000 Menschen an den tödlichen folgen des Erregers gestorben. Noch ist für die Zivilbevölkerung kein zugelassenes Medikament oder eine Impfung erschwinglich. Gleichzeitig erschwert der Rückgang der Ebola Ansteckungen in Westafrika die Einordnung wissenschaftlicher Studien. Die Befürchtungen um Unklarheiten in der Wirkung des Wirkstoffs sind groß. In Mali hat das Gesundheitsministerium bereits ein offizielles Ende der Epidemie verkündet.
