Fomalhaut b ist lediglich Staub
Mehrere Jahre lang beobachtete das Hubble-Telescope der Raumfahrtorganisationen ESA und NASA einen sich bewegenden Punkt, das als 25 Lichtjahre entfernter Planet ungewöhnlich hell schien und scheinbar seinen Stern umkreiste. Das als Planet vermutete Objekt hatte keine nachweisbare Infrarot- Wärmesignatur. Einer von vielen Gründen, warum erste Zweifel früh geäußert wurden. Formalhaut b wurde 2008 auf Grundlage der Daten des Teleskops aus den Jahren 2004 und 2006 identifiziert. Astronomen gingen zunächst davon aus, dass die ungewöhnliche Helligkeit auf eine Hülle oder einem Ring aus Staub zurückzuführen ist . Zudem deuteten Beobachtungen darauf hin, dass das Objekt keiner elliptischen Umlaufbahn folgt, wie es für Planeten üblich ist.
Das durch Astronauten als Planet beobachtete und für einen Exoplaneten gehaltene Objekt, ist dann auch nach neuesten Erkenntnissen nun wohl doch kein Planet, sondern eine große Ansammlung an Staub. Dabei erregten die ersten Bilder viel Aufmerksamkeit. Fomalhaut b galt als erster Planet, der direkt im optisch sichtbaren Licht nachgewiesen werden konnte. Immer deutlicher jedoch machten fortlaufende Beobachtungen, dass es sich nicht um einen Planeten handeln konnte. Die aufgenommenen Bilder widersprachen zunehmend den ersten Eindrücken. In Hubble-Bildern aus dem Jahr 2014 mussten die Forscher dann feststellen, dass das Objekt verschwunden war. Die Forscher können inzwischen sogar mit großer Sicherheit sagen, dass es sich nie um einen vollständig ausgebildeten Planeten gehandelt hat. Die Staubwolke sei die Folge einer Titankollision zwischen zwei eisigen Körpern in der Größe von Asteroiden. Die Ergebnisse wurden durch zwei Astronomen der University of Arizona im Fachmagazin PNAS veröffentlicht. Das Diagramm auf der rechten Seite lässt erkennen, wie aus dem ursprünglich dichten und hellen Punkt ein immer mehr undeutlicher nebliger Fleck wird. Der derzeitige Durchmesser der aus Staubpartikeln bestehenden Wolke wird auf mehr als 100 Millionen Kilometer geschätzt..
