So konnte das Extrakt aus den Blättern der Kastanie die Staphylococcus aureus Bakterien nachweislich unschädlich machen. Das Forscherteam um Alexander Horswill von der Universität in Iowa City stieß auf der Suche nach medizinisch wirksamen Inhaltsstoffen in den Kastanienblättern auf Abwehrstoffe der Pflanze, die in der Behandlung von Staphylococcus aureus wirksam sind.
Der pflanzliche Auszug jedoch tötet die Bakterien nicht, sondern macht sie vielmehr unfähig gewebsschädigende Gifte zu produzieren, wie es Studienautorin Cassandra Quave von der Emory University in Atlanta schilderte. Zugleich löst es keine Resistenzen aus, wie es bei einer gewöhnlichen antibiotischen Behandlung der Fall ist. Das berichtete das Fachmagazin PLOS ONE. Die Blätter der Esskastanie gelten als neuer Hoffnungsträger und stehen kurz vor einem medizinischen Durchbruch. Diese könnten auch helfen Methicillin-resistenten Keime, kurz MRSA, zu bekämpfen und gleichzeitig der Entstehung neuer Resistenzen vorbeugen. Erste erfolgreiche Ergebnisse konnten im Labor erzielt werden. Schon eine einzige 50 Mikrogramm-Dosis des Mittels reichte aus, um keimbefallene Wunden auf der Haut von Mäusen zu heilen. Das Ergebnis wurde lange Zeit beobachtet und zeigte keine Anpassung der Erreger. Selbst in der Bekämpfung der hartnäckigen MRSA-Stämme konnte das Kastanienmittel Wirkung zeigen ohne dabei die gesunden, nicht pathogenen Staphylokokken auf der menschlichen Haut zu gefährden. Den Forschungsergebnissen ging eine jahrelange Recherche und Befragung in ländlichen Gebieten des Mittelmeerraums voraus, in dem versucht wurde Informationen zu traditionell bewährten Heilmittel zu sammeln. Während der Recherche war bekannt geworden, dass Einheimische aus den Blättern der Kastanie Tee kochten, um damit Hautentzündungen und Infektionen zu behandeln. Die in den Kastanienblättern enthaltenen Wirkstoffe dienen in freier Natur zur Abwehr von Pilzbefall und Parasiten. Zwar kommen Staphylokokken bei vielen Menschen vor, können aber bedingt durch geschwächten Immunsystem, im Alter oder im Krankheitszustand Wundinfektionen und Entzündung in den Atemwegen verursachen. Die außer in den Schleimhäuten und auf der Haut von Menschen vorkommenden Staphylokokken sind auch in Gewässern und der Luft vorzufinden. Sie besiedeln ebenso warmblütige Wirbeltiere. Die Resistenz des Bakteriums gegen Antibiotika macht sie besonders gefährlich. Das Kastanienextrakt nimmt den Stapylacoccus aureus Bakterien die Fähigkeit miteinander zu kommunizieren. Somit wird die Produktion von Giften unterbrochen.
