Das Internet der Zukunft nähert sich um ein bedeutendes Stück. Datenübertragung im optischen Glasfasernetz könnte jetzt um ein Vielfaches beschleunigt werden. Ein superschneller Chip den Schweizer Wissenschaftler der ETH-Zürich mit einer internationalen Forschergruppe entwickelt haben, soll dies ermöglichen. Im Rahmen der europäischen Horizon-2020- Forschungsinitiative konnte ein Chip entwickelt werden, auf dem sich schnelle elektronische Signale direkt in superschnelle Lichtsignale umwandeln lassen. Und das ganz ohne Signalverlust.
Die Plasmonik ist ein Teilgebiet der Photonik. Die wenigsten Menschen können sich etwas unter diesem Begriff etwas vorstellen. Aber was sie vielleicht gehört haben dürften ist, dass diese Technik seit Jahren als Hoffnungsträger für superschnelle Chips gehandelt wird. Denn mit ihr lassen sich sich Lichtwellen in Strukturen zwingen, die viel kleiner sind als die Wellenlänge des Lichts. Plasmonik-Chips sind wesentlich kleiner als elektronische. Deshalb lassen sich nun auch viel kompaktere monolithische Chips herstellen. Ganz genau bedeutet das, dass diese sowohl eine Photonik-, als auch eine Elektronikschicht umfassen.
Seit rund 20 Jahren arbeitet die Forschung daran, Daten noch schneller und effizienter zu übertragen. Die wachsende Nutzung zahlreicher Internetdienste erfordert schnelleres Internet. Die heutigen Glasfasernetze ermöglichen bereits sehr schnelles Streamen, digitales Telefonieren und Fernsehen. Doch auch diese optischen Kommunikationsnetze könnten aufgrund der steigenden Nachfrage nach Online-Diensten für Streaming, Speicherung und Rechenleistungen, sowie das Aufkommen von künstlicher Intelligenz und 5G-Netzwerken bald ihre Grenzen erreichen. Während optische Netze derzeit Datenübertragungsraten im Bereich von Gigabits (109) erzielen, werden in absehbarer Zukunft Übertragungsraten im Bereich von Terabits (1012) benötigt werden.
Bislang werden die elektronischen und photonischen Bauelemente getrennt voneinander hergestellt und später verbunden. Die getrennte Herstellung hat Nachteile: Sie ist kostspielig und mindert bei der Umwandlung von elektronischen Signalen in Lichtsignale die Leistung. Dadurch wird die Übertragungsgeschwindigkeit in lichtleitenden Kommunikationsnetzen begrenzt, so Ueli Koch, Postdoktorand in Leutholds Gruppe und Hauptautor der Studie, die in der Zeitschrift Nature Electronics erschienen ist.
Auf diese Weise verliere man deutlich an Signalqualität, so Koch. Dadurch werde auch die Geschwindigkeit der Datenübertragung mit Licht begrenzt. Die Lösung setzt bei einem auf dem Chip angebrachten Modulator an. Dieser wandelt die elektrischen Signale in Lichtwellen um und erzeugt Licht in einer bestimmten Intensität. Eine kompakte Bauweise des Modulators ist Voraussetzung, um Qualitäts- und Intensitätsverluste zu vermeiden, und das Licht, beziehungsweise die Daten, schneller als heute zu übertragen.
Eine Schichtung bei der die elektronischen und die photonischen Komponenten wie zwei Schichten dicht übereinanderlegt und auf dem Chip verbindet werden, gewährleistet diese Kompaktheit. Diese Schichtung, genannt „On-Chip-Vias“, reduziert die Übertragungswege und die Verluste der Signalqualität. Die sogenannte «monolithischen Ko-Integration», bei der Elektronik und Photonik auf einem einzigen Substrat realisiert sind, ist bislang daran gescheitert, dass die Photonik-Chips viel größer sind als die elektronischen. Diese Problem wird dadurch gelöst, in dem Photonik durch Plasmonik ersetzt wird.
