Biotransformation durch Fischembryonen
Ein Forschungsprojekt, dass das Ausmaß der Tierversuche im Zusammenhang mit dem Nachweis toxischer Umweltstoffe im Wasser zukünftig vermindern soll, wird vom Land Baden-Wüttemberg mit rund 107.000 Euro gefördert. Geleitet werden die Forschungen vom Heidelberger Biologen Prof. Dr. Thomas Braunbeck, der im Rahmen seiner Untersuchungen Ansätze ausarbeitet, inwiefern sich ausgewachsene Fische in Tests zur Prüfung von Umweltschadstoffen im Wasser von Fischembryonen substituieren lassen. Braunbeck ist Leiter der Arbeitsgruppe„Aquatische Ökologie und Toxikologie“ am Centre for Organismal Studies der Universität Heidelberg. Das Projekt wird für zwei Jahre gefördert. Ein internationales Forscherkonsortium hat die Verwendung von Fischembryonen für den Nachweis toxischer Effekte von Chemikalien im Wasser bereits bis zur Anwendungsreife gebracht. Dem ist eine Untersuchung vorausgegangen, bei dem Fische in frühen Entwicklungsstadien die zuvor voll entwickelten Fische ersetzt hatten. Ein entsprechender Erfolg könnte die Zahl von Versuchsfischen um jährlich ca. 100.000 Tiere reduzieren, so Prof. Braunbeck. Dennoch ist die Skepsis an dieser Methode vorhanden. So wird die Fähigkeit der Embryonen des Zebrabärblings angezweifelt, dass die Ausscheidung potenziell toxischer Stoffe durch die sogenannte Biotransformation, in der die Verstoffwechselung toxischer Stoffe geschieht, erreicht werden kann.
