Internetsucht ist ein Begriff mit dem sich Gesundheitsbehörden in Zukunft wohl öfter konfrontiert sehen werden. Einen rasant wachsenden pathologischen Konsum hat in diesem Zusammenhang der Cybersex, eine Unterordnung der Internetsucht ausgelöst. Derzeit ist das Ausmaß der rezipierten virtuellen Erotik die sich beinahe grenzenlos der Internetsucht anschließt, nicht im Bewusstsein der Gesellschaft angekommen. Internetsucht ist eine Angelegenheit die gerne hinter den klassischen Suchtproblemen verschwindet. Trotz der Studien die hin und wieder öffentliches Aufsehen erregen, fehlt die öffentliche Debatte wie sie auch über die Alkoholsucht geführt wird. Der wissenschaftliche Ansatz zur Internetsucht steckt noch in den Kinderschuhen. Fehlende international anerkannte Standards und Konzepte erschweren die Entwicklung dieses Forschungsgebiets. Grund ist auch die übersichtliche Menge an Studien vor allem zu Cybersex. Weder WHO noch DSM können Diagnoserichtlinien vorweisen und fordern weitere Forschungsergebnisse. Der Cybersex kann dennoch gravierende Zahlen bieten. Für die USA wurden 40 Millionen spezifische Aufrufe verzeichnet. Im Jahr 2006 wurde in den Niederlanden eine Studie erhoben in der festgestellt werden konnte, dass 75% der minderjährigen Mädchen und 80% der Jungen sexuelle Erlebnisse im Internet hatten. Dabei ist es schwierig das Problem der Abhängigkeit von Cybersex ohne die allgemeine Internetabhängigkeit zu betrachten, da beide Fälle mit sozialem Rückzug, Leidensdruck und fehlendem Selbstbewusstsein und Lebenssinn einhergehen. Auch wird eine Grundsatzdebatte darüber geführt, ob die Interneterkrankung als eigenständige Erkrankung zu betrachten ist oder ob es sich um das Symptom einer anderen Krankheit handelt. In der enzyklopädischen Ausführung wird die Cybersexsucht als eine von drei Spielformen der Internetsucht die zu dem Chatt-, Spiel- und Internetsexsucht gehören, verstanden. Viele Psychologen distanzieren sich inzwischen davon die Ursachen solcher substanzungebundenen Suchterscheinungen auf einschlägige Erlebnisse oder fehlende Aufmerksamkeit in der Kindheit zurückzuführen. Viel mehr sei der Focus auf den Umgang mit der Gegenwart zu lenken um die eigene Kompetenz zu stärken. Nach einer umfassenden Studie der DAK zur Internetnutzung können viele Eltern eine gemäßigte Nutzung von Smartphone und Computer nicht durchsetzen. Jugendliche reagieren zum Teil aggressiv. Die exzessive Internetnutzung birgt für viele die Gefahr in den Cybersex abzurutschen. Der fehlende soziale Umgang verleitet zum unkontrollierten Pornokonsum. Im Zuge der ansteigenden Zahl von frei zugänglichen Videoplattformen hat sich der Konsum pornographischer Darbietungen zu einem echten Problem entwickelt. Die Rede ist von 400.000 Internet-Sexsüchtigen.
