Weltraummission „MERLIN“ beginnt 2021
Frankreich und Deutschland wollen in der Klimaforschung durch die gemeinsam geplante Weltraummission MERLIN die Ursachen des Klimawandels, genauer die Methankonzentration in der Erdatmosphäre in bislang unerreichter Genauigkeit messen. Das Projekt ist damit nach Brigitte Zypries, Koordinatorin der Bundesregierung für die Luft- und Raumfahrt, „ein wesentlicher Baustein für die Umsetzung der Pariser Klimaziele“. Angesichts der Tatsache, dass das Treibhausgas Methan 25 Mal stärker als CO2 auf das Klima einwirkt, erfüllt diese technische Zusammenarbeit einen wichtigen Schritt in der vielfältigen Herausforderung. Die Bezeichnung MERLIN für das gemeinsame Kleinsatellit steht für Methane Remote Sensing LIDAR Mission und soll seine Arbeit ab 2021 in Höhe von 500 Kilometern, die Erde umkreisend, beginnen. Das Abkommen zur Konstruktions- und Bauphase wurde durch das Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) und dem Französischen Raumfahrtagentur CNES im Beisein von Brigitte Zypries, parlamentarische Staatssekretärin im Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie (BMWi) und dem französischen Staatssekretär für Bildung und Forschung am 14 September in Berlin geschlossen.
Dr. Gerd Gruppe, Vorstand für das DLR Raumfahrtmanagement, und CNES-Präsident Jean-Yves Le Gall haben die Vereinbarung unterzeichnet. Beide Länder setzen damit einen technischen Meilenstein im Kampf gegen den Klimawandel. Denn MERLIN soll ein besonders differenzierten Einblick in die einzelnen Mechanismen die für die Auswirkungen auf das Klima der Erde bedeutend sind, gewähren. Vorgesehen sind die gemeinsamen Auswertungen der gesammelten Daten in dafür eingerichteten Laboren. Beide Länder übernehmen jeweils einen Spezialbereich durch das sich das Projekt auszeichnet. Frankreich stellt den von der französischen Raumfahrtindustrie und von CNES entwickelten Satellitenbus „Myriade Evolutions“ auf den MERLIN aufbaut, zur Verfügung. Deutschland hingegen stellt die Nutzlast- ein aktives LIDAR- Instrument (LIght Detection And Ranging), des Satelliten zur Verfügung, welche im Auftrag des DLR mit Mitteln des BMWi in Deutschland entwickelt und gebaut wird. Mittels der LIDAR-Technologie ist es auch unter den Bedingungen von Dunkelhit und dünner Wolken möglich, präzise Messungen der Methankonzentration durchzuführen. Beteiligt am Bau des LIDAR ist eine Kooperation von Forschungsinstituten und Firmen aus Deutschland, Niederlanden und Frankreich. Die Leitung wird von der Airbus Defence and Space GmbH in Ottobrunn ausgeführt. In der gemeinsamen Konstruktion sieht DLR-Vorstand Dr. Gerd Gruppe „eine Innovation die weit über das Projekt hinausrecht“.
