Wissenschaftler entwickeln Sperma-Formel
Eine mathematische Formel, entwickelt von einer internationalen Forschergruppe mit Wissenschaftlern der Universitäten in York, Birmingham, Oxford und Kyoto, soll die Befruchtung der Eizelle in ihren einzelnen Phasen verständlicher machen, um neue Forschungsansätze für medizinische Behandlungen zu ermöglichen. Konkret geht es um die Untersuchung der rhythmischen Bewegungen der Spermazellen, die der medizinischen Forschung neue Wege für die genauere Erforschung der Befruchtung eröffnet. Dadurch wäre es unter anderem möglich, die Behandlung der männlichen Unfruchtbarkeit voranzubringen. Ihre Ergebnisse hierzu veröffentlichten die Wissenschaftler in der Fachzeitschrift Physical Review Letters. Die Forscher konnten beobachten, dass der charakteristische Rhythmus der Geißel das Spermium nach vorne drückt und dabei den Kopf rückwärts und seitwärts koordiniert zieht. So wird die Trägerflüssigkeit in einer mathematisch erfassbaren Weise bewegt, die es erlaubt, einfache Formeln zu bilden. Diese Formeln könnten in Zukunft teure medizintechnische Ausrüstungen und Computersimulationen, die in der Behandlung und Diagnosestellung der Unfruchtbarkeit Anwendung finden, ersetzen. Außerdem fanden die Forscher heraus, dass das Spermium zum Teil konträre Bewegungen macht, um voran zu kommen. Mit der mathematischen Lösung hoffen die Forscher, das Verhalten größerer Guppen von Spermien ergründen zu können. Durch reine Beobachtungsmethoden lässt sich diese Herausforderung jedoch nicht bewältigen. Mit bisherigen Simulationsmethoden könne der Spermafluss zwar identifiziert werden, aber aufgrund der komplexen Struktur der Trägerflüssigkeit seien die Daten besonders schwierig zu verstehen, so Dr. Hermes Gadelha von der Abteilung für Mathmatik. Denn eine einzige Probe allein beinhalte rund 55 Millionen Spermatozonen. Durch die mathematische Formel wolle man diesem Problem entgegentreten, um vor allem zu verstehen, warum nur eine geringe Anzahl an Spermien im Prozess der Befruchtung erfolgreich ist. Die Formel kann die Bewegung des Samenplasmas also vorhersagen. Nun geht es darum, dieses Modell auf eine größere Gruppe von Spermien zu übetragen.
