UN-Bulletin – Eine Million Kinder unterernährt
Die Unterernährung findet angesichts der steigenden Gewalt nicht genügend Aufmerksamkeit in Afghanistan, von 1000 Kindern sterben 55 vor ihrem fünften Geburtstag und eine Millionen afghanischer Kinder seien nach Angaben humanitärer Helfer unterernährt. Diese Einzelheiten gehen aus dem humanitären Bulletin der Vereinten Nationen (UN) für Juli hervor. Afghanistan ist das Land mit der zweitstärksten Sterblichkeitsrate der Welt. Trotz der Tatsache, dass sich die Sterblichkeitsrate seit den vergangenen Jahren fast halbiert hat, befürchten Experten aufgrund der aufkommenden Unruhen eine Umkehr des Trends. Nur 35 Prozent aller Kinder mit schwerer Mangelernährung, so die UN, würden Hilfe bekommen und nur 25 Prozent dieser Kinder werden geheilt. Die UN weisen außerdem darauf hin, dass in nur 38 Prozent aller afghanischen Kliniken eine gezielte Ernährungsbehandlung angeboten werde. Diese Zahl steht im ungünstigen Verhältnis zu den lediglich 60 Prozent der Afghanen, die einen Zugang zu den Kliniken haben. Eine Veränderung sei aber unmöglich, solange mehrere Komponenten des Gesundheitssystems „kritisch unterfinanziert blieben“.
